2 Chrysididae Zakynthos

Postby pietsje » 11 Jul 2013 15:17

Pictures today 11/7/2013 Zakynthos.
First one I think maybe Chrysis analis? Rather large and stocky, about 6-7mm (only 1 picture)
The other one smaller, about 4-5 mm (3 pictures), mayby a hedychrum spec.?

Hurray, more from Zakynthos! :)

The first one reminds me of Chrysis scutellaris Fabricius, 1794, but that is a western (europe) species, so its not likely.

The second one is a Holopyga sp., see the bent medial vein in the forewin and the big, triangular, anterio-ventrally drawn out mesopleuron.

Continued good Chrysididae hunting down there!

PS. do you collect any Chrysididae, or just photograph them?

Alex, many thanks for your explanation! I will go further searching for them. Unfortunately for you I do not collect them. I'm not a scientist and I could get into problems with customs. I know that they could have scientific value but elas :-( I'm not such a good catcher). My friends are asking me if there are any persons on the island ;-) because of all the insects on my pics. http://observado.org/user/photos/50326#

I came across a mention of a eastern "sister" species of C. scutellaris, under that species in Linsenmaier 1997 Die Goldwespen der Schweiz; Chrysis soror, Dahlbom 1854, perhaps this could be it? It is simply described as "sehr ähnlich" [very similar] to C. scutellaris, which this specimen certainly is.

I understand with the collecting, although if you really want to keep specimens a good way is to simply mail them to a home address from abroad, worked for me a couple of times. ;)

Thanks Alex, for your reply. I'm already home so no collecting or sending any more unfortunately. There were a lot of interesting insects to study in Zakinthos. Thanks also for your suggestion of C. soror.
Kind regards,
