Chrysis ignita group - England

Postby JRsbugs » 13 May 2011 21:15

Hello all,

I have just joined, I'm very pleased to see a forum here now!

Is this a male of Chrysis ignita? Found on 4th May on my south facing wall, near Lincoln UK. Size 7mm or a little more. Habitat is a mixture of sandy grasslands and deciduous woodlands. It was taking a nap until the sun shone.

Taken with a Nikon D90 using a Nikkor 105mm micro lens and 2x teleconverter.

Thanks,

Regards, Janet

Welcome Janet!

your specimen surely belongs to the Chrysis ignita group.
But I'm not really sure about the ID.
It could be Chrysis impressa, but I should see the apex of the last tergite in dorsal view, the black spots on S-II and the mandibles in lateral view to be sure.

M. Archer recently published a paper on the British species of this group.
You can find some more addictional informations and a lot of pictures in the very last massive work by J.v. der Smissen:
Schlüssel zur Determination der Goldwespen der engeren ignita-Gruppe (Hymenoptera, Aculeata: Chrysididae). Mit detaillierten Beschreibungen und 502 Original-Abbildungen. Verhandlungen des Vereins für Naturwissenschaftliche Heimatforschung zu Hamburg e. V. 43: 4-184.

Best Regards

Hello Paolo, thank you for the welcome and all the information you have given me! I found the website with the works you mentioned listed, I don't know how I would manage to get hold of the papers though.

It's a shame I couldn't have got the features you mentioned, it was sleepy so I may have been able to get those shots but I didn't know and the wasp is long gone. It's not often they are found so still! I'm happy to be able to call it a possible Chrysis impressa. :D

I'm not sure where S-11 is though. ;) I hope to get more in the future with luck.

Best regards,

Janet

:D ahahah :D
Please excuse me!

S-II means second sternite of the abdomen (ventral side).
Basically you can see it only when the specimen is dead.
So, don't worry, you cannot take pictures of this part with living specimens.

Best Regards
Paolo

Thanks Paolo, that occured to me afterwards. I'm one of those people who like to take photos but I can't kill them. If I ever see one immobile again I could try to cool it off more in the refrigerator to get these details now that I know, I could easily have caught it.

Best regards and thanks for your time,

Janet :D

I looked at my photos, I had one which almost shows the tail end in dorsal view, not sure if that will make any difference but I will post it anyway.
