Hedychrum ? - Romania

Postby cosmln » 18 Oct 2011 23:12

Ciao,

With another specimen... so you don't forget me

I think that this belong to genus Hedychrum, is a female so... this stayed in dried material of a friend until reached me, together with some Anthaxia :) .
Collected in Romania: Moldova: Galati: Garboavele Ft. - 2.july.2005, leg. Adrian Ruicanescu.

Is possible to have a full name? :thanks: :thanks:

A bigger photo here.

gerstaeckeri maybe? if it was caught in nothern europe that (I think?) is the only one with "male" (or "C. ignita if you wish) colouration of females. And the mid-tibia fossa seems (hard to make out for me) to be rather long, also pointing towards gerstaeckeri. But Moldova is not nothern europe, so I bet there are many more contenders ;)

Side note: I wish I had collected insects when I was in Romania :/ Atleast I got a good reason for returning at some later point though :D

no idea if or not gerstaeckeri, for now I'm happy if I'm right with the genus name.
that region of Moldova is particularly warm, with a lot of influences from the south.

If you ever come in Romania maybe you let me know, not the first time to be a guide or at least maybe I can help with something.

:thanks: :thanks:

Hey, from your wonderfully sharp (and large) pictures the strongly bidentate claws are visible, so then it is easy even for a novice like me ;)

Hello everyone!

I don't think it's H. gerstaeckeri.
I think it's H. longicolle Abeille. This species is quite common in SE Europe till Bulgaria, and probably also in Romania.

The main difference is given by the lenght and colour of the hairs, in particular on the last tergite.
On the anal margin there are not long and black hairs, which are typical in gerstaeckeri. They are short and whitish.
An other good character is given by the shape of the last sternite, we cannot see this one. Cosmin, could you compare it with Linsenmaier's line drawings?

Ciao

Hi Cosmin,

Thanks for your pictures.
The mid-tibia is usefull only when you examine males.
The apex of the last tergite is not very visible in the picture. The best way is to compare this sternite with the last sternite of a real gerstaeckeri. Do you have it?

Ciao
