All green

Postby el.gritche » 27 Sep 2014 09:35

Hello,

Seen on Salix alba, licking honeydew (south-west France), around 7mm:

Is it an Holopyga, and in this case H.fervida male ?

Thanks in advance.

Nice shots!

Its a Pseudomalus (very deep scapal basin and the mesopleuron has this "out-turned" edge, kinda hard to explain the characters, you'll have to compare some shots of the genera), but which species I'm not proficient enough to say. Generally a view of the abdomen from behind is needed, so that the shape of the apical notch on the last tergite is visible.

Edit: From the quite long hairs, and moderate size, and colour it could perhaps be P. violaceus unless there are more species with these characters in the area. Paolo should know :)

Thanks Alex.
I understand what you mean.

P.violaceus was my first guess because on same tree, with the Chrysididae, several times I saw also big Pemphredon (probably lugubris) which is host of violaceus.

Hi!!

Yes, I would say P. violaceus male too. Males often have this greenish colour.
There aren't similar large species in SW France, only P. pusillus, which considerably is smaller and with a different habitus.

Nice shots.
Cheers
Paolo
